Meeting dates announced for North Hills' new School Climate and Culture Council
Heather Pelat

The North Hills School District Board of Education's Community and Intergovernmental Relations Committee will host the North Hills School District School Climate and Culture Council in a series of public work sessions throughout the school year.

The council is chaired by LaMont Lyons, the district’s new Director of Student and Community Engagement. He, along with the Community and Intergovernmental Relations Committee members, Superintendent Dr. Mannarino and the six building principals will focus on the student experience in our schools. Additionally, Dr. Don Sheffield, an expert in cultural competency who aims to maximize the potential of all children, will serve as an advisor to the district.

The public work sessions will be the forum for Mr. Lyons, in collaboration with building principals, to share initiatives and discuss opportunities, weaknesses and threats as they pertain to school climate and culture. Principals are at the forefront of the student experience and key to ensuring a healthy learning environment for ALL learners regardless of demographic.

The superintendent and school board members will observe and  listen to the experiences of students in our schools and gather insight and information to guide district support for students.

Each meeting will not exceed 90 minutes. The final 15 minutes will be reserved for current students and parents and guardians of current students to comment on the work of the council. Comments will be limited to three minutes per person.

Mr. Lyons and the principals will respond and address comments at the meeting as they are able. Some questions and comments may require research and/or extended discussion following the meeting.

Any student or parent or guardian of a student experiencing an issue pertaining to the student experience is encouraged to contact their building principal or Mr. Lyons as these issues arise and not wait for these public work sessions.

All of the meetings will begin at 6 p.m. The location will rotate through our schools. The meetings for 2024-25 will take place as follows:

  • September 30 – North Hills Middle School Library
  • November 25 – Highcliff Elementary School Cafeteria
