On August 29, West View Elementary School first graders joined local leaders for the rededication of Powell Park. The park, named after former West View Mayor Richard E. Powell, was recently updated with renovations to the playground, basketball court, gazebo, picnic tables and benches.

A decorated World War II veteran, Mayor Powell was active in local politics and the community his entire life. He served 37 years as West View’s mayor from 1969 to 2006. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 93.

"Richard E. Powell will always be remembered for his love and commitment to the Borough of West View and its residents," the borough wrote on its website. "It is through the leadership of exemplary individuals such as him that West View stays "A Good Place to Live.'"

The park renovation was possible thanks to a $100,000 Allegheny County Gaming Economic Development Tourism Fund (GEDTF) grant award, along with a $45,000 contribution from West View Borough.

Last spring, North Hills High School senior Alex Bowers earned the rank of Eagle Scout by reimaging old bicycle parts to create a bicycle rack to donate to the park.
