West View renovation nears final phase as students return to school

West View Elementary School will reopen to students for the 2024-25 school year with more renovated spaces including a new kitchen in the cafeteria and new art room.

The construction has reached its final stretch with just one phase of the project to go. Completion is slated for the summer of 2025 in time for the start of the 2025-26 school year to coincide with the building’s 100-year anniversary.

In addition to the kitchen, updated with new appliances and a new student serving area, the dining areas have new flooring, tile and paint.

The art room is now located in the large space that was the original library and is bright, open and inviting.

Several classrooms untouched in previous phases of the project were renovated over the summer with new windows, flooring, paint and fixtures. Larger lockers and updated signage have been added throughout the building.

The gym was updated with new bleachers and fresh paint. The basketball hoops and upper windows of the gym will be replaced in the final phase of the project.

Some classrooms, including the computer lab and music room, are in temporary locations. Extra staff members will be on hand over the first few days and as needed to direct students.

The important thing for families to keep in mind as students return to the classroom is the school is still under construction and that is evident by uncovered ceilings, unpainted walls and concrete flooring, but the building is functional and safe.

Construction will continue during the school year, as it did in previous years. All active work areas are securely separated by temporary walls and soundproof barriers ensuring that construction crews have no access to the portion of the building where teaching and learning is taking place.

Families should also note that some teachers only just recently got into their classrooms and as such, there is still work to be done and classroom preparations may continue beyond the first day of school.
